IELTS Listening Band Score Calculation

The IELTS Listening test consists of 40 questions, and each correct answer earns you one mark. Your total score out of 40 is then converted into the IELTS band scale from 0 to 9.

IELTS Listening Test Preparation – Different Formats, Types of Questions and Activities

Time: 30 minutes

The Listening test for IELTS is common for both IELTS Academic and General Training. You will respond to 40 questions derived from four sound recordings made by native speakers of English. Each of the recordings is only presented once. You have 10 questions to answer in each section.

What the IELTS Listening Test measures

  • The Listening test checks how well you can pinpoint:
  • Key ideas and important details
  • The opinions and attitudes of speakers
  • The intention behind a statement
  • The sequence of reasoning
  • Structure of the IELTS Listening Test
  • You will listen to four different recordings:

Recording 1: A dialogue between two participants in a social interaction.

Recording 2: A speech in the form of a monologue in a daily life setting, for instance, a speech about services in the area.

Recording 3: A conversation with as much as four speakers in a curriculum or instructional setting, e.g. a student speaks with a tutor about an assignment.

Recording 4: A lecture on an academic subject, such as a lecture from a university.

Categories of Questions in the IELTS Listening Exam

1. Multiple Choice Questions

  • Choose the letter that best fits your answer. The right answer could be A, B, C, or both A and B or A and C.
  • These questions examine whether you capture the details or the main idea of the recordings.

2. Questions on the Audio Matching

  • A list of items that will be mentioned in the recording will be matched to the items on the question paper.
  • This question category assesses your competency in understanding relationships and connections between concepts.

3. Plan, Map, or Diagram Labelling

  • Using the information provided to you, complete the label for the map, diagram, or plan that is provided to you.
  • This evaluates the ability to follow a guideline and interpret a spatial presentation.

4. Form, Note, Table, Flow Chart, or Summary Completion

  • You will complete missing words do certain formats such as notes, forms, and tables or even in flow charts.
  • The participants are limited to the number of words in the recording and only a specific phrase or word is appropriate in answering the question.

5. Textual Completion

  • You will be provided with sentences for you to fill in based on the key ideas presented in the listening exercise.
  • You may or may not be limited in the number of words that you can use to answer, and if you go above the set number of words you will be marked as incorrect.

6. Brief Textual Questions

  • This usually deals with questions that have close-ended answers. These are usually factual questions that need brief answers.
  • These questions measure the scribe’s ability to capture specific important details like names, date indications, and figures and numbers.
